Set at White Pass on U.S. Highway 12, roughly 53 miles west of Yakima and 54 miles east of Morton, White Pass Ski Area occupies the southern Washington Cascades about 25 miles southeast of Mount Rainier and 30 miles north of Mount Adams. The resort's first chairlift, Pigtail I, arrived in 1956, a two-person lift climbing 1,500 feet to 6,000 feet, cutting the original Holiday and Cascade runs. A second Pigtail lift followed in 1958, along with the Mach V and Paradise runs, and White Pass began offering seven-day-a-week skiing that same season, with lift tickets running $3.50. From a base of 4,500 feet to a lift-served summit of 6,500 feet, White Pass delivers a 2,000-foot vertical drop across 1,402 acres, more than doubled in size by the landmark 2010 Paradise Basin expansion, a $9 million project that added 767 acres, 13 new runs, two new Doppelmayr quads, and the mid-mountain High Camp Lodge. The Hammerhead Terrain Park, located on Rib Eye off the Basin Quad, hosts rail jams and slopestyle events for freestyle riders. Limited night skiing runs on three lower slopes Saturdays and holidays, and beyond the alpine terrain, the White Pass Nordic Center offers 18 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails winding through the Wenatchee and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. Less than three hours from Seattle, White Pass stays refreshingly uncrowded compared to its busier northern neighbors.
