Rising above the town of Whitefish in the Flathead National Forest of northwest Montana, just a short drive from the entrance to Glacier National Park, Whitefish Mountain Resort has been a Montana skiing institution since 1947. Long known by locals as Big Mountain before the resort officially adopted the Whitefish name in 2007, the mountain rises from a base of 4,464 feet to a summit of 6,817 feet, delivering a 2,353-foot vertical drop, nearly half a mile, across roughly 3,020 acres of skiable terrain on every aspect of the peak. Its 110-plus named trails are served by 14 lifts, including the Snow Ghost Express six-pack, and an average of 300 inches of snow blankets the mountain each season, so heavy and wet that it freezes the alpine firs into the ghostly white figures that give the resort's signature lift its name. The longest run, Hell Fire, unspools 2.52 miles through the beautiful Hellroaring Basin, while Hellroaring itself is the mountain's most advanced terrain, holding cliffs, vertical chutes, and tight, technical tree skiing. The Northside offers sustained glades in Window Pane, and Bighorn delivers genuine steep pitch. On many days the clouds hang low enough that skiers can literally ski above the clouds, carving through fields of snow ghosts with the Flathead Valley spread out below. Four terrain parks and night skiing on weekends round out the experience, and downtown Whitefish, just four miles from the base, offers restaurants, shops, and a free ski bus, giving the mountain a genuine, small-town charm that big-name resorts simply cannot replicate.
