Set in Ghent, West Virginia, just five minutes off I-77 halfway between Bluefield and Beckley, Winterplace was West Virginia's second commercial ski area, founded by future West Virginia governor Hulett C. Smith and businessman John McKay, and designed by former Army officer Robert K. Potter. The resort opened with four tow ropes and a double chair on a modest 2,800-foot trail, and was marketed from the start as the southernmost ski resort in the Eastern United States, drawing skiers up the I-77 corridor from North and South Carolina alongside locals from Virginia and West Virginia. From a base of 2,997 feet to a summit of 3,600 feet, Winterplace delivers a 603-foot vertical drop across roughly 90 skiable acres, with 27 trails served by nine to eleven lifts, including two quad chairs. This handcrafted map captures every trail in beautiful layered wood relief.

Two terrain parks add jumps, rails, and boxes for freestyle riders, and the resort's snow tubing park, the largest in West Virginia with 14 lanes served by two carpet lifts, gives non-skiers in the family plenty to do as well. Compared to bigger regional resorts like Snowshoe, Winterplace stays refreshingly relaxed, affordable, and focused on family fun.
