Set on Marsh Mountain in McHenry, Maryland, near the northern shore of Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, close to the borders of West Virginia and western Pennsylvania, Wisp Resort has been Maryland's only downhill ski area since it opened in the winter of 1955, making it one of the oldest southern ski areas in the country. From a base of 2,415 feet to a summit of 3,115 feet, Wisp delivers a 700-foot vertical drop across 132 to 172 acres, with 33 to 34 trails and roughly 11 miles of skiing served by 12 lifts, including two quad chairs, five triple chairs, and multiple conveyors. Three terrain parks are redesigned throughout the season by Wisp's staff, and with 90% of the mountain lit, night skiing runs Tuesday through Sunday for locals and visitors chasing extra laps after dark. Beyond the slopes, an 11-lane Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park, a year-round mountain coaster, and scenic chairlift rides overlooking the lake and mountainside make Wisp a genuine four-season destination, drawing skiers from Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and everywhere in between.
