Vermont Long Trail Map - Wood Wall Art
by Mountaincut
America's original long trail, now on your wall. Mountaincut's Vermont Long Trail Map is a layered wooden wall art piece featuring the full route of the nation's oldest long-distance hiking trail, expertly laser cut from premium birch and/or walnut plywood, a handcrafted tribute to the 272-mile footpath that traces the spine of the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Canada.
The Trail That Started It All, Captured in Wood
Running the full length of Vermont along the main ridge of the Green Mountains, the Long Trail was conceived on March 11, 1910, by James P. Taylor, and built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, making it the oldest long-distance hiking trail in America, predating even the Appalachian Trail, which it directly inspired. Starting at the Massachusetts border near Clarksburg and running north to the Canadian border near North Troy, Vermont, the trail stretches 272 miles and summits all five of Vermont's 4,000-foot peaks, including Mount Mansfield, the state's highest point, along with Camel's Hump, Killington Peak, Mount Abraham, and Mount Ellen. The southern 100 miles run concurrently with the Appalachian Trail before splitting at Maine Junction near Killington. This handcrafted map captures the entire route, peak by peak, in beautiful layered wood relief.
Every Peak, Every Shelter, Every Memory
Known as the "footpath in the wilderness," the Long Trail is easy in a few sections and genuinely rugged in most, with roughly 68,000 feet of cumulative climbing over its full length and more than 70 backcountry shelters and campsites maintained by the Green Mountain Club along the way. The southern stretch shared with the Appalachian Trail tends to see more hikers and easier terrain, passing directly over the summits of ski resorts Bromley, Stratton, and Killington, while the northern half beyond Maine Junction grows steadily more remote and demanding, climbing through the Monroe Skyline over Camel's Hump, Mount Ellen, and Mount Abraham before reaching Mount Mansfield and finally Jay Peak near the Canadian border. More than 200,000 people hike some portion of the Long Trail every year, and roughly 330 complete a full end-to-end thru-hike, typically taking 18 to 25 days at a pace of 12 to 15 miles a day. Along the way, hikers pass Stratton Pond, the largest body of water on the trail, and the legendary single chairlift at Mad River Glen ski area.
Exceptional Craftsmanship, Made in the USA
All Mountaincut wooden maps are precision laser cut and etched, hand-stained, and finished in the United States using birch and/or walnut plywood. The layered construction creates a rich, dimensional look where the trail's full route and the Green Mountains it follows stand out in beautiful relief. Hanging hardware comes preinstalled, so your new map will be on display in minutes.
Because each piece is crafted from real wood, no two maps are exactly alike, with natural variations in the grain and stain giving every piece its own character, just like the trail itself.
The Perfect Gift for Long Trail Hikers
Whether you completed a full end-to-end thru-hike, section-hiked your way north through the Green Mountains one summit at a time, spent a night at Stratton Pond or beneath Mount Mansfield, or simply love that America's oldest long trail runs right through your home state, this map is a lasting reminder of the footpath where long-distance hiking in this country began. It makes a genuinely meaningful gift for a hiker celebrating a finished trip, a Green Mountain Club volunteer, or anyone who counts the Long Trail among the great loves of their life.
